Bennie Leroy Tipton was born on September 4, 1929 to Ben and Mamie Spurgeon Tipton. Leroy was the youngest of five children; Cecil, Violet, Pearl, Lawrence and Leroy. He passed away February 15, 2014 in Fenton, Missouri at the age of 84.
Leroy started his education at the Shinkle School House in Vichy and graduated from St. James High School in 1946. During his high school years, he worked at Kroger’s grocery store in St. James. After he graduated, he continued his employment with the grocery store until the business closed and then went to work for International Shoe Factory in St. James. Leroy later applied for a janitorial position at Rolla School of the Mines. He worked at night while he went to school during the day. He worked hard and took every opportunity for advancement until he eventually worked his way into the Mechanical Engineering Department as the instructor. Leroy worked for the university from September 3, 1963 until he retired on January 16, 1992.
Leroy was married to Wilma Ann Welch on December 4, 1949 to which three children were born; Dennis Tipton, David Tipton and Cheryl Daniels. Leroy is preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters and dear daughter, Cheryl. Cheryl and Leroy are survived by Cheryl’s son Nicholas Schott and her husband Dan Daniels.
Also surviving Leroy is the love of his live and lifelong mate, Wilma of the home. Dennis, his wife Joyce of Vichy along with their daughter Tonya and her husband Rick Price and their children; Derek, Mason, Dalton and Skyler; and their son Thad Tipton and wife Jessica with their children; Brayden, Camryn, Ella and Cash all of Belle. David, his wife Shevawn of Vichy and their daughter Heather and her husband Andrew Wunderlich and daughter Avery of Olathe, Kansas and son Ben with his wife Cathy and two daughters Abby and Anna of Rolla. Leroy is also survived by several nieces and nephews as well as many, many friends.
Leroy was born and raised in Vichy, Missouri and he and Wilma built their home on the family farm. Leroy loved his farm and enjoyed working it with his sons and grandchildren. He enjoyed raising cattle and always looked forward to hay season.
Leroy lived for his family, community and church. He was very active and at the age of 84 was still working the farm, fighting fires with the Vichy Volunteer Fire Department and rarely missed a social activity (especially if there was a meal involved). Leroy loved his Lord and church. He was a member of the Broadway Baptist Church and was ordained as a deacon on March 18, 2012.
Leroy loved horses and to trail ride. In his early years, he was a regular at the Eminence Trail Ride and hosted many trail rides from his home and started a Tractor Cruise as fundraisers for the Vichy Volunteer Fire Department who was his second family. Leroy put his heart and soul into the fire department and served the organization during its entire existence. He went on his last fire call February 3, 2014 with Ken Ramsey.
Leroy had two friends other than his many human friends that he truly treasured. One was his horse Ranger that he rode in numerous parades and trail rides, and the second was his loyal and loving dog Jack. Jack accompanied Leroy on many outing and was known by many as the Mayor of Vichy. Jack spent his time entertaining his grateful master.
Leroy had many, many friends in so many places. He never knew a stranger and was always eager to chat with anyone he came into contact with. There are not enough words or paper to express how wonderful of a man and mentor Leroy is. There will be no strangers as he enters Heaven…….
