Maxine L. Steelman

Maxine Livesay Steelman, age 91, of Salem, Mo. died Monday, February 17, 2020, at Salem Memorial Hospital. She was born September 11, 1928 in Morgantown, West Virginia, the youngest daughter of Dr. Edward A. and Helen Hungate Livesay. She was married on November 21, 1951 to Dorman Lloyd Steelman. She was a graduate of West Virginia University and moved to Missouri to teach dance at what was then Christian College, now Columbia College. Maxine Steelman never lost her love of dance. Throughout her life, and into her nineties she would urge, cajole, and threaten others to join her on the dance floor. She also learned to love the state of Missouri and its agriculture. She was a proud cattle farmer who became certified in artificial insemination. She loved working in her garden and floating the Current River. She was passionate about Missouri politics and the Republican Party. One word universally used to describe “Mana”, as she was affectionately known by each grand and great grandchild was “feisty”. She was fiercely independent and lived her life to its fullest. She also loved her family and is reunited in death with her husband Dorman, who preceded her in death on March 1, 2007, her youngest son Donald Alan, and her sisters, Betty Cayton and Virginia Allen. Survivors include two children, David Lloyd Steelman and his wife, Sarah, of Rolla, Mo: Deborah Macon, and her husband, Tom Macon, of Tampa, Florida. 6 grandchildren, Amanda Steelman, Samuel Steelman, Joseph Steelman, Travis Ward, Michael Steelman, and Livasey Ward; and 5 great grandchildren,Lillian Hazel Moore, Graeme Steelman, Billie Grace Steelman, Logan Ward, and Carter Ward, as well as her sister Alice Boatwright-Vincent and her daughter in law Linda Skeeters Steelman. Visitation will be at James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem, Missouri beginning at 12:00pm noon on Friday, February 21st. The memorial services will start at 1:30 p.m. with Tim Cook of Rolla officiating. Internment will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Dorman and Maxine Steelman Scholarship, given to college-bound graduates of Salem High School and managed by the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, cards are available at all James & Gahr locations.
